Friday night I got the
opportunity to visit The Catty Shack, a non-profit organization that is home to
many big wild cats. The tour I went on was where they feed all of the cats,
which ended up being twenty pounds of meat for each cat. If you are looking for a fun and inexpensive thing to do
on the weekend or weekend, I definitely recommend going here. The Catty Shack
cost $15 and all of the proceeds go to feeding, housing and medical care for
the animals. They are unlike the zoo in that they rescue these big cats from
bad situations. The current cats there include tigers, lions, cougars, leopards
and bobcats. They also have an artic fox and a coatimundis which could be
described as a mix between an anteater and a raccoon. The Catty Shack is
located North of the Jacksonville Zoo on Starratt Road. They are open for
nighttime feedings every Friday and Saturday from 7:15 to 8:30. This wildlife
sanctuary has trained the cats during feeding time to go to designated wooden
platforms where a volunteer then opens a hinge in the fence to feed it. They
are also different from the zoo because of how close you can actually get to
the cats.
